The iStock project’s main objective is to optimize the monitoring and management of clinical/hospital inventory and make it more intuitive for the user. By achieving this goal, it is possible to save time and resources from warehouse technicians and nursing assistants that manage inventory in the advanced units. By using an innovating system, the interaction between nurses/nursing assistants and the system is highly reduced, increasing their free time on a daily basis. This will allow the professional to reach for better medical care and at the same time reducing the amount of equipment spent on this services.

It is evident the impact of a healthy diet in our lives and in the prevention of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and cancer. However, it is not always easy to decide which ailments are adequate to fulfil a certain diet as the food product labels contain a lot of information and there are several personal conditions influencing this decision: allergies, restrictions of certain nutrients or follow a diet plan. Moreover, we believe that the first step to change the way people eat and to prevent the previously mentioned diseases starts at the moment of choosing a product at the supermarket and MyNutriScan will be there to help this choice.
MyNutriScan is a solution designed to help people making healthier decisions in the moment of choosing a food product in the supermarket. It combines the nutritional information from the user with the information of the food product’s label and provides personalized recommendations and feedback, presenting to the user a view of the most relevant details of each product while always taking in account the user’s personal nutritional plan/goals (defined by the user or even a nutritionist). The solution can take the form of a mobile app, through the scanning of the barcode of a product, or a browser plugin.
All in all, it helps you decide whether you should consume a food product or not, just like having your own Nutritionist inside your pocket!

The Espaço 24 project is a collaboration between JUNITEC and Instituto Superior Técnico which aims to monitor the ambient conditions of the study spaces. Monitoring stations installed in several rooms of the Espaço 24 in Instituto Superior Técnico contain sensors to measure environmental variables such as temperature, light, noise and air quality. The data obtained is stored in a web server and is made available to the whole community, through a website and an app.
This project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the study conditions of Técnico’s study areas, while allowing each student to identify and choose the rooms they find more productive.
Due to the success of the first edition, JUNITEC pursued the growth of TecStorm, making it a national reference event in the technology and entrepreneurship fields. The 2018’s objectives are: “More time, greater reach and better conditions”.
In order to reach this goal we will count on partners in the organization of the event, reaching a larger number of students with a greater geographic diversity. In comparison with the first edition, the main differences are not only in the duration of the event, since in TecStorm’18 it will be forty-eight hours, but also in the fact that it covers the whole country, not focusing only on students from the region of Lisbon. In addition, a problem bank will be available before the event, for teams to be able to join the new Social Category – turn an idea submitted by a patient into reality. Social Category will be developed in partnership with Patient Innovation and will certainly provide solutions with an high impact not only for patients but also for the whole society. The key idea of the event will remain, being this the stimulus of the creative and enterprising spirit, with the purpose of obtaining prototypes of high quality and projection, that could be the origin of a startup.
TecStorm is an Engineering event directed to university students, whose goal is not only to promote the creative, innovative and enterprising spirit, but also the core business of JUNITEC. The first edition took place on March 4 and 5, 2017 at the Instituto Superior Técnico. Teams where composed by three to five members and in twenty-eight hours developed a project based on an idea previously submitted. Subsequently, it was evaluated by a jury that, in turn, decided the three best teams. The evaluation was based on the innovation and applicability of the idea, on the functionality and effectiveness of the prototype and on the pitch during the demonstration and presentation of the results. In this edition, the first prize was awarded to the Mine Hunters project, which consisted of a minesweeper robot controlled by GPS coordinates. Secondly, the Sleepy Readers team was classified, which developed a project with the goal of energy saving through a motion sensor that kept the light on. Finally, the third place was destined to the Estufados project, which was a “smart” greenhouse, that was based on the control of the temperature, humidity and luminosity of a small greenhouse through an application.
The gym project consists on the creation of a fitness equipment monitoring network, in order to evaluate its usage. The sensor network covers more than 100 machines per gym and presents different challenges in its design, from the choice and production of the sensors themselves, to the connection of all machines in an IoT (Internet of Things) network, which can be accessed through an online platform.
This project is developed over two phases:
Prototype Testing / Network Creation –
a more research-oriented phase. It consists in choosing different types of sensors (non-intrusive), where each one represents a different solution to withdraw data from the machines. Each sensor is connected to a microcontroller, which connects via Wi-Fi to a server, through which it is possible not only to receive data, but also to send commands to each sensor (eg calibrate, reset). Later, through the analysis of the different approaches used, it is decided which is more adapted to each type of machine.
Creation of the online platform / Prototyping
It consists on the creation of a personal IoT platform, through which we can connect and control all the gym equipment, whose data will be stored in a database. In this platform, it will be possible to obtain multiple usage statistics such as percentage and time of use of each machine, data organization by time intervals (day, week, month, etc.) and by set of machines (treadmills, bodybuilding, etc.) between others. It is also at this stage where they recreate the prototypes developed previously, so they can become more robust and occupy as little space as possible. Subsequently, the assembly and installation of all the necessary sensors in the gymnasiums is carried out.
At this time, the project is at the end of the first phase. Different prototypes were installed and the best approaches for each machine are being analyzed.
Meteo is a project that consists on creating a weather application for android. Developed in partnership with Maretec, a company of Instituto Superior Técnico, Meteo proposes a practical, functional and national alternative to existing applications in the market.
This application consists of three main sections. The first is more geared towards the current weather state. In this section of the application we have the temperature as well as the current sky state, the maximum and minimum temperatures, the direction and the value of the wind and the pressure. Also observed, for the day in question, the moments of sunrise and sunset, as well as the lunar phase.
In the second section of the application, with the help of an illustrative graph, the temperatures and sky conditions are displayed from hour to hour for the 24 hours following the current time.
In the last section, we have a design similar to the previous section, but in this case, it is for the 6 days following the current day.
The application guarantees an update of the data by a connection to a server that updates them in a suitable time interval. It also has the possibility of changing the measurement units.
This project arose from a partnership with Patient Innovation in which we were made known the case of Diogo. As a carrier of Charcot-Marie Tooth disease, Diogo suffers from hand coldness which, as a pianist, affects his dexterity in playing piano. The project consists of the development of a portable heating device with user-adjustable temperature control. Inserted in removable pockets it is possible to be discreetly used in several pieces of clothing, such as the concert jacket.
The first prototype was delivered to Diogo and feedback was received. In a second edition of the project, four more evolved prototypes were sent to the London Science Museum as part of the European exhibition ‘Beyond the Lab’, in partnership with Patient Innovation. The next phase of the project is to turn the removable thermal pockets into a final product that can be commercialized.
In this new version the goal will be to incorporate the pockets into a jacket. It will incorporate 3 pockets inside. Two of them will have the blanket and the thermistor and the other will be both the controller and the powerbank.
At this point only the official project documents have been completed and orders are being planned. In the next step, already with the acquired material, will begin the experimental tests.
